Instructions

Paul Tough identifies several factors that help children succeed in school and in life:

Part 1: Individual Preparation (4 minutes)

Your teacher will assign you one factor.

Make notes answering the following questions:

  • What does this factor involve?
  • Why might it be important for children's development?
  • What could happen if children do not develop this factor?
  • How does it compare with other factors in the list?
  • Can you think of any examples from education or everyday life?

You may write key words and short notes only.

Part 2: Collaborative Discussion (4 minutes)

Task

Here are some factors that may help children succeed in school and in life. Talk together about how important each factor might be and decide which one is the most important.

You should discuss:

  • how each factor contributes to children's success
  • whether some factors are more essential than others
  • which factor schools should prioritize
  • which factor has the greatest long-term impact

Part 3: Decision (2 minutes)

You must reach a joint decision.
